Welcome
to Summerhouse Vineyard
Wine
growing is a new venture for Mrs Elizabeth Scott within
her family-run arable farm at Skellow, just north
of Doncaster. The first vines were planted in 2005
in the limestone soils at Summerhouse Farm on a one-hectare
parcel of land selected for its gently sloping southerly
aspect. The vines have flourished and yielded well
and the first tastings are very promising.
Most
English wine, including Summerhouse, is produced from
hybrid vines quite simply because hybrids thrive in
our climate. |
| Even
more interesting is the success story of English sparkling
wines, a combination of the cussed nature of the vine,
a plant that produces its very best quality when things
have not been easy for it, and the edginess of our
climate. English vineyards already have a track record
of stunning wines – evidenced in blind tasting
competitions where some English wines have beaten
the very best of champagnes. |
|
| Summerhouse
2008 wine is ready and waiting to be discovered, Seyval
Blanc and Rondo. Next year we hope to add Madeleine,
Phoenix, Pinot Noir and a sparkling wine. |
| It
is interesting to note that protectionism and restrictive
practices by the wine producers of some countries (notably
France) dictate that all wines from hybrid vines, irrespective
of quality, be designated as ‘Table Wine’
or ‘Regional Wine’ and that EU Regulations
(we all know how sensible these are) ban hybrid vines
as ineligible for inclusion in the ‘Quality Wine’
scheme. |
